From the LocSec
by Travis Hardin
THE ALABAMA RG concluded on August 15, and once again the ingredients came together just in time to cook up a tasty RG. Adding to the enthusiastic local crowd, a number of regulars came from Birmingham and Atlanta. I also met people from North Carolina, Florida, California, and yes, Iraq. Army SSgt. Bob Turner, recently secretary for our group, gave a talk about his experience supervising vehicle maintenance at the Baghdad airport.
THE TALENTED Steinhice siblings caused many in the audience to split their sides laughing at their "Steinhice Capades." Charlie Steinhice also hosted the popular Mensa Bowl and his sister Eileen hosted Fishbowl Forum. I appreciate their contribution to the weekend, and my thanks also go out to the other talented speakers and program leaders.
PLEASE THANK the hard-working RG co-chairs Debbie Omel and Valeta Glover, the always hard-working food planner and preparer Katherine Levine, registrars Rob Glover and Jan Buster, and the many people who pitched in (or were drafted) to prepare for programs, to keep the food and drink moving along the conveyor to waiting hands, and to pack up and transport. Offering board games and theme T-shirts all weekend were Rebecca Podolski and son David. The unsung heroism department for toil above the call of duty includes: Valeta Glover, Glenn and Shirley Jackson, Diana Halsey, Linda Mann, Shirley Sims, Louise Hardin, Kevin Omel, Nick Hagar, and the Radisson Suite Hotel staff who extended their duties to include decorating for the wedding.
CONGRATULATIONS to Roger and Martha Williams, who exchanged wedding vows in the Quaker tradition on Saturday evening in the presence of their guests and their Mensa friends. Mensan Louise Hardin was the celebrant.
EVALUATION FORMS for you to offer feedback on the RG are available at the Web site of the LocSec (Www.mindspring.com/~travhard/eval.htm) and at the North Alabama Mensa Web site (www.northalabama.us.mensa.org/).
MIKE SEIGLER, RVC, sent a certificate of appreciation recognizing this group's high level of participation in Proxy Quest, the national effort to ratify a necessary by-law. It was ratified in July.
FINALLY, thank you who are serving as local officers this year: Don Derry is secretary; David Riquelmy is membership officer; Roger Williams is treasurer, and Kevin Omel is newsletter editor. Thank you for the solid job you are doing. The appointed officers are equally energetic.
