OLD MECKLENBURG created 1763 - everything west of Anson Co.; shrank greatly 1769 by creation of Tryon on the west.
OLD TRYON 1769-1779 became Lincoln and Rutherford. Created 1769 to extend west indefinitely; 1773 South Carolina permanently claimed southern half of Tryon and a notch out of Mecklenburg; 1779 Tryon ceases to exist; small east block became Lincoln, all of west becomes Rutherford.
DISTRICT OF WASHINGTON (future Tennessee) created 1776, also occupied the future Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, and west half of Wilkes counties; 1778 Washington lost NE tip to Wilkes Co.

Goochland County. Established 1728 north of Brunswick; the westernmost county after Brunswick.
Augusta County est. 1738 attached to Orange. Name for all land west of the Blue Ridge. 1745 Augusta organized.
Pittsylvania created 1767 from western Halifax.
Botetourt created 1770 from southern Augusta and reaches to North Carolina line and to the west indefinitely.
Fincastle created 1772 from southern Botetourt and reaches to NC and indefinitely west. 1777 Fincastle divided into Kentucky, Montgomery, and Washington counties.
